ZF, a German auto parts manufacturing company, disclosed seat belt heating technology at CES 2023 on the 5th local time. We've seen heated steering wheels, heated seats, and even heated cup holders, and they're not new. But seat belt heating is the first time we have heard of it.

Why develop seat belt heating technology? ZF explained that pure electric vehicles face a decline in mileage in winter, and one of the most important reasons is that the owner wastes electricity by turning on the heater in the car. Because the air conditioner needs to heat the air first, and then the passengers will feel the heat. The steering wheel heating and seat heating are the heat that the passenger's body can directly feel, so it will save more power. In order to allow passengers to feel the heat more directly, ZF has developed seat belt heating.

ZF explained that Tropical will help reduce the energy consumption used by drivers and passengers to heat electric vehicles. This seat belt works in conjunction with the heated seats, as well as the heated steering wheel, and is designed to maximize efficiency.

According to ZF, hotwire seat belts can reduce the need for indoor air heaters during cold weather, thereby increasing the range of a vehicle by up to 15%. Because heating smaller elements consumes less energy than raising the temperature of the entire room.

Seat belt heaters are made with special belts with built-in heating conductors that are slightly thicker than standard belt sizes. According to ZF, the heated seat belts are designed to provide warmth evenly around the occupant's body. The heated seat belt uses about 70 watts of electricity and provides a temperature between 36 and 40 degrees Celsius.

ZF believes that seat belts work in a similar and identical manner to conventional seat belts without compromising safety. As a result, automakers can apply seat belts to vehicles without further changes or procedures. In addition, ZF also said that the warmth of the heated seat belts can guide passengers to take off their outer clothes, and the seat belts can work better in the event of a collision, which is also very effective in terms of safety.

Plus, the idea of heated built-in seat belts isn't new. In 2018, Ford filed for a U.S. patent on a similar idea, and about a year later, Mercedes-Benz unveiled a GLE-based Experimental Safety Vehicle with hotwire built-in seat belts. However, seat belts that can be heated have not been commercialized on a large scale. It is estimated that in the era of fuel vehicles, the necessity of seat belt heating is relatively low.

No automaker has yet decided to use ZF's latest technology. However, if the battery efficiency is proven, it may also be suitable for advanced pure electric vehicles in the future.

In my opinion, the starting point of this technology is good, but how high the necessity is is still worth pondering. On the one hand, the seat heating effect is already very good, the contact area between the seat and the body is larger, and the heat feeling is more direct. The contact area between the seat belt and the body is too small, and the heat transfer is not direct. In addition, its cost is also worth considering if it is promoted on a large scale.
